Semen freezing, also known as cryopreservation, plays a crucial role in infertility treatment for couples struggling to conceive. This process involves preserving a man's sperm sample for future use, providing a viable option for assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Semen freezing allows individuals to store their sperm for a variety of reasons, including undergoing medical treatments that may affect fertility or for proactive family planning. The sample is then processed, mixed with a cryoprotectant solution to shield the sperm from damage during freezing, and meticulously frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at extremely low temperatures. Frozen semen provides a convenient option for individuals who may not be able to produce a sample on the day of treatment. Frozen sperm has been found to have similar success rates in fertility treatments as fresh sperm.
